Throwback Thursday: Lessons Learned From My December Vegas Vacation

There’s something magical about Las Vegas—its lights, energy, and larger-than-life personality make it the ultimate destination for fun. But, as with any trip, Vegas also came with its fair share of challenges. This December, we set out for a group adventure with a mantra in mind: “Lesson learned.” We decided that no matter what hiccups we encountered, we’d treat them as learning opportunities and stay positive. By the end of the trip, we had a new list of travel tips and lessons to carry forward for the next group adventure.

Here are the top lessons we learned during our Vegas vacation:

1. Group Trips Are Chaotic by Nature

Traveling with a group adds an extra layer of complexity. Someone is bound to miss an important piece of information, which can derail the whole team. This happened to us multiple times during the trip—missed meet-up times, confusion over reservations, and the occasional miscommunication.

By the last day, we had finally smoothed out some of the chaos. For our next trip, we’ve decided to use a better messaging app that works seamlessly across both iOS and Android devices (because outdated phones are still a thing!). The goal is to ensure everyone stays in the loop, no matter their device or tech preferences. Additionally, we’ll set clear plans and reminders ahead of time to keep everyone on track.

Lesson learned: Communication is key, and so is finding the right tool to make it work for everyone.

2. Double-Check Reservations and Orders

When you’re in a rush, it’s easy to make mistakes. Case in point: we ordered a regular Uber, only to realize we actually needed an XL to accommodate everyone. It wasn’t a huge deal, but it added unnecessary delays and stress.

Moving forward, we’ve learned to take an extra moment to slow down and confirm the details of what we’re booking—whether it’s a ride, restaurant reservation, or show tickets. Slowing down and double-checking might seem like a no-brainer, but when you’re in the middle of a bustling city like Vegas, it’s easy to overlook.

Lesson learned: Go slow to ensure you’re booking exactly what you need.

3. Plan Around Physical Limitations

Vegas involves a lot of walking, from exploring the Strip to navigating through massive hotels. One thing we overlooked was checking for any recent injuries or physical limitations within the group.

Midway through the trip, it became clear that some walking routes were too ambitious for certain members of our party. For the next trip, we’ll assess the physical needs of everyone beforehand and consider incorporating public transportation or accessible transportation options when needed. It’s all about being proactive to ensure everyone enjoys the experience without overexertion.

Lesson learned: Know your group’s physical needs and adjust accordingly.

4. Avoid Third-Party Hotel Bookings

One of the biggest frustrations of the trip came from booking our hotel through a third-party site. While it seemed like a good deal at first, it ended up being a headache. From delayed confirmations to limited flexibility in making changes, it was far less convenient than booking directly through the hotel.

Using the hotel’s website or app not only saves money but also streamlines the process. Plus, many hotels offer perks, like loyalty points or upgrades, when you book directly.

Lesson learned: Skip third-party bookings and go straight to the source.

5. Carry Cash for Tips and Incidentals

Vegas thrives on cash, whether it’s for tipping valets, waitstaff, or grabbing a quick coffee. Unfortunately, ATM fees in Vegas are outrageous, and running out of cash can quickly become an expensive problem.

We learned the hard way to carry enough cash for tips and small purchases. Next time, we’ll plan ahead and ensure everyone has some cash on hand to avoid those sky-high ATM fees.

Lesson learned: Bring cash—it’s a lifesaver for tips and unexpected incidentals.

Wrapping It Up

Despite the hiccups, our Vegas vacation was an unforgettable experience filled with laughs, memories, and valuable lessons. By embracing the mantra “Lesson learned,” we turned potential frustrations into opportunities to improve our future travel plans.

Vegas taught us that group trips will always come with a bit of chaos, but with the right tools, flexibility, and preparation, they can still be a blast. Whether it’s improving communication, planning for physical needs, or booking smarter, every trip is a chance to learn and grow.

Would I do it all over again? Absolutely—but this time, with a few tweaks to make the ride a little smoother.
