The Ordinary Bruja

For fans of Mexican Gothic and The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina, The Ordinary Bruja is a psychological horror and magical realism novel about grief, ancestral secrets, Dominican brujería, and one woman’s fight to reclaim the magic her family tried to bury.

When strange messages appear in mirrors, and the scent of cigar smoke follows her through her small Ohio hometown, Marisol Espinal must confront the ghosts of her past, the truth about her mother’s death, and the family curse waiting for her on Hallowthorn Hill.

Her family buried the magic. Now it wants out.

Breaking in Habits is Like Breaking in Boots – Start Small, March Strong!

When the clock strikes midnight on January 1st, the world collectively feels the buzz of fresh starts and new beginnings. It’s inspiring, isn’t it? But here’s the thing—real transformation doesn’t hinge on a specific date. Whether it’s a new year, a new month, or even just a random Tuesday, any moment can be your turning point.

That said, I’ve learned to respect the symbolism of the new year. For some, it’s the perfect line in the sand—a moment to declare, “This is where my new journey begins.” And I’m here for it. But let’s be real: it takes more than a midnight toast or a flashy resolution to create lasting change. It takes patience, small consistent actions, and a willingness to embrace the process.

And that’s where my favorite analogy comes in: breaking in new boots.

Why Habits Are Like Boots

Imagine you’ve just bought a brand-new pair of boots. They’re shiny, stiff, and totally unprepared for a long ruck march. You wouldn’t wear them for the first time on the big day, would you? Of course not! That’s a surefire recipe for blisters, discomfort, and possibly swearing off boots altogether. Instead, you’d take it slow. You’d wear them around the house, let them mold to your feet, and gradually break them in before tackling anything more intense.

The same principle applies to habits. Jumping in too quickly—whether it’s committing to an hour of daily exercise or swearing off sugar cold turkey—often leads to burnout or frustration. But if you ease into it, start small, and build over time, you create something sustainable and, dare I say, comfortable.

How to Break in Your Habits

So, how do we “break in” habits the way we’d break in a great pair of boots? Here are three simple steps to help you ease into lasting change.

1. Start with Small Steps

Begin with a manageable commitment. If you want to start working out, don’t aim for an hour at the gym right away—start with ten minutes. Writing a book? Commit to writing for just ten minutes a day. The key here is consistency, not intensity. Those ten minutes will grow naturally over time, but for now, they’re your way of proving to yourself that you can show up.

2. Embrace Gradual Growth

Like breaking in boots, your habits need time to expand. Add a little more each week—a few extra minutes, a slightly bigger challenge. The goal is to grow without overwhelming yourself. Think of it as letting those boots slowly mold to your feet. With each small step, you’re getting more comfortable and more prepared for the long haul.

3. Celebrate Your Progress

One of the best ways to keep your motivation alive is to celebrate your wins. Maybe you gamify your progress with a habit tracker or journal about the milestones you’ve reached. Acknowledging your growth—no matter how small—fuels your confidence and reminds you why you started in the first place.

The Journey is the Goal

Transformation isn’t about rushing to the finish line. It’s about the journey—those small, intentional steps that get you closer to your goals without breaking your spirit along the way. Whether you’re breaking in boots or breaking in habits, remember: slow and steady is not only okay, it’s necessary.

This year, let’s focus on building sustainable habits that fit us like a well-loved pair of boots. Let’s ditch the pressure of perfection and embrace the process instead.

So, what habits or goals are you breaking in this year? I’d love to hear about them! Share your journey in the comments or tag me on social media. Let’s motivate each other to march strong into 2025—blister-free.
