The Ordinary Bruja

For fans of Mexican Gothic and The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina, The Ordinary Bruja is a psychological horror and magical realism novel about grief, ancestral secrets, Dominican brujería, and one woman’s fight to reclaim the magic her family tried to bury.

When strange messages appear in mirrors, and the scent of cigar smoke follows her through her small Ohio hometown, Marisol Espinal must confront the ghosts of her past, the truth about her mother’s death, and the family curse waiting for her on Hallowthorn Hill.

Her family buried the magic. Now it wants out.

When the Writing Gets Spooky, and the Spooky Gets Real

Writers love signs. Some of us light candles, set intentions, shuffle tarot cards, or just wait for that perfect little wink from the universe that tells us we’re on the right track. But when you’re writing spooky shit, sometimes the confirmation is downright terrifying.

Let me tell you what just happened.

I was editing a quote from The Ordinary Bruja, making sure it flowed smoothly. I always use Scrivener’s speech feature to listen to my sentences out loud—it helps me catch awkward phrasing and fine-tune the rhythm of the words. I reached this moment in the scene:

“You let her die.”

As soon as the words played through my speakers, something thumped loudly behind me. I jumped, my heart doing an Olympic-level sprint, and when I turned, there it was—my pillow, lying on the floor.

Now, this pillow wasn’t just lying around, waiting to fall. No, it had been tucked away securely on top of my bag. There was no reason, no logical explanation for why it suddenly decided to launch itself at that exact moment.

Coincidence? Maybe. But when you’re deep in writing about eerie whispers and haunted pasts, and your reality echoes that energy, it feels like a confirmation straight from the unseen.

And you know what I did? After the initial what the actual hell moment? I laughed, nodded at the pillow like it had just given me divine validation, and went right back to writing. Because that’s how I know The Ordinary Bruja is exactly the kind of book I want it to be—spooky enough that the story itself starts playing tricks on me.

If you love books that give you real spooky vibes, that carry a little something extra in the air when you read them—then you need The Ordinary Bruja in your hands. Because if my own writing sessions are haunted, imagine what will happen when you start reading.
