The Ordinary Bruja

For fans of Mexican Gothic and The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina, The Ordinary Bruja is a psychological horror and magical realism novel about grief, ancestral secrets, Dominican brujería, and one woman’s fight to reclaim the magic her family tried to bury.

When strange messages appear in mirrors, and the scent of cigar smoke follows her through her small Ohio hometown, Marisol Espinal must confront the ghosts of her past, the truth about her mother’s death, and the family curse waiting for her on Hallowthorn Hill.

Her family buried the magic. Now it wants out.

Throwback To Happily Single and Not Ready to Mingle

A smiling woman sits comfortably on a couch with a laptop on her lap, surrounded by cozy pillows and a warm cup of tea nearby. The text overlay reads, "Happily Single and Not Ready to Mingle – A Look Back," framed in a lighthearted and reflective tone.

Ah, the memories of Singlehood Rd and Spinster Ave—what a delightful throwback! Revisiting this blog post, I can’t help but laugh at how unapologetically content I was with my single status. Let’s take a trip down memory lane to a time when I proudly waved my “single cat lady” flag and had zero shame about it.

Single, Sassy, and Comfortable

In this post, I shared my refusal to navigate the murky waters of Dating Alley. Dating apps? No thanks. Awkward restaurant meet-ups? Hard pass. Instead, I chose to park my proverbial car on Singlehood Rd and bask in the glory of me-time. I wrote about cracking open books, diving into Netflix marathons, and unapologetically avoiding the kitchen.

I wasn’t anti-love—I was just pro-me. And honestly, I admire that version of myself who had the courage to say, “I’m good, thanks,” to societal pressure. It’s not easy to embrace singlehood in a world that constantly pushes you to couple up, but there I was, cheering on my fellow single cat ladies.

Looking Back: Growth and Gratitude

Fast forward to today, and life has changed in beautiful, unexpected ways. That quirky cat sweater I proudly donned back then? It’s still in my closet, but now it’s accompanied by a dog leash, family schedules, and a warm, fulfilling partnership. Funny how life works.

What’s most significant, though, is realizing that I didn’t have to force love to find me. In the end, Prince Charming didn’t show up on a dating app or over an awkward dinner date. He was right there in the everyday moments—bringing me iced coffee at work and making me smile when I least expected it.

The Lessons I’ve Learned

  1. Singlehood is a Gift: Taking time to love yourself and focus on your growth isn’t just important—it’s transformative.
  2. You Can Be Happy Alone: Society may tell you otherwise, but being single isn’t a punishment. It’s a time to explore, discover, and truly understand yourself.
  3. Love Finds You When You’re Ready: You can’t force it, and when the timing is right, it happens in the most unexpected ways.

Cheers to the Cat Ladies (and Beyond)

To my single cat ladies still hanging out on Singlehood Rd, raise your glass, mug, or bowl of cereal—whatever works! Cheers to embracing your independence and living life on your own terms. And for those who’ve transitioned from cat lady to cat-and-dog lady (like me), let’s not forget where we came from and how much we’ve grown.

Here’s to self-love, unexpected love, and every quirky sweater in between.
