The Ordinary Bruja

For fans of Mexican Gothic and The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina, The Ordinary Bruja is a psychological horror and magical realism novel about grief, ancestral secrets, Dominican brujería, and one woman’s fight to reclaim the magic her family tried to bury.

When strange messages appear in mirrors, and the scent of cigar smoke follows her through her small Ohio hometown, Marisol Espinal must confront the ghosts of her past, the truth about her mother’s death, and the family curse waiting for her on Hallowthorn Hill.

Her ancestor buried the magic. Now it wants out.

My stomach is doing the absolute most because I’m deep in the second draft of The Forgotten Bruja and already revisiting Isadora’s funeral scene.

And listen… there is something very unhinged about coming back home after you put your whole middle finger up and said, “I’m never coming back.”

But that’s exactly where Isadora is.

She left Willowshade with every intention of becoming someone else somewhere else. She wanted France. She wanted distance. She wanted a life that did not smell like grief, family secrets, old houses, and a cursed hill that knows too much.

Now her mother is dead. The town still remembers her family in the ugliest ways. And the inheritance waiting for her is not just land or a house. It is a legacy no one properly explained and a curse that has been swallowing the Espinal women for generations.

This second draft is all about story flow, emotional tension, and making sure the horror is not just spooky but personal. Because the scariest thing in this book is not only the magic.

It’s the family history nobody wanted to talk about.

It’s the silence.

It’s the rot that got passed down until someone finally had to dig it up.

The Forgotten Bruja is a Dominican gothic horror novel about grief, inheritance, brujería, family secrets, and the terrifying cost of returning to the place that made you.

And yes, Isadora is already stressing me out.
