The Ordinary Bruja

For fans of Mexican Gothic and The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina, The Ordinary Bruja is a psychological horror and magical realism novel about grief, ancestral secrets, Dominican brujería, and one woman’s fight to reclaim the magic her family tried to bury.

When strange messages appear in mirrors, and the scent of cigar smoke follows her through her small Ohio hometown, Marisol Espinal must confront the ghosts of her past, the truth about her mother’s death, and the family curse waiting for her on Hallowthorn Hill.

Her family buried the magic. Now it wants out.

A Taste of Cuba: Our Family Dinner at La Bodeguita de Mima

Interior of La Bodeguita de Mima Cuban Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky, featuring a warm ambiance with chandeliers and vintage décor. The text overlay reads "Cuban Flavors in Louisville Kentucky."

Introduction

Dining out with family is always an adventure, and our recent visit to La Bodeguita de Mima Cuban Restaurant and Bar in Louisville, KY, was no exception. Nestled on Market Street, this spot has become a beloved destination for us, not just for its mouthwatering Cuban cuisine but for the vibrant atmosphere that transports you straight to Havana. This time, we made an early reservation at 4:30 PM, which turned out to be a perfect choice for avoiding the usual dinner rush.

Our Experience

Unlike our previous visit during my son’s birthday, when the place was bustling with energy and patrons, this time we were seated immediately. The kids were thrilled to avoid a long wait, and we quickly dove into the menu.

The Food

I ordered the Pollo al Mojo, while my stepdaughter chose the Arroz Con Pollo a la Chorrera. While the dishes arrived promptly and looked as delicious as ever, we noticed a significant difference this time—the saltiness. Both dishes were notably saltier than we remembered. It felt like the chef had a bit of a heavy hand with the seasoning. Although it didn’t ruin the meal, it was something we all noticed and discussed at the table. On the bright side, the empanadas remained a highlight of the meal—crispy, flavorful, and just as we remembered.

Service and Atmosphere

Despite the slight hiccup with the food, the service was impeccable. The staff was attentive, accommodating, and friendly, making our family feel welcomed. The colorful decor, the rhythmic Cuban music in the background, and the lively ambiance all added to the experience, making us feel like we had taken a mini-vacation to Cuba.

Conclusion

La Bodeguita de Mima continues to be a family favorite, even with the minor salty surprise. We’ll definitely return—perhaps we’ll just mention our preference for less salt next time. If you’re looking for authentic Cuban flavors, a vibrant setting, and excellent service, this spot is worth a visit.
