In this week’s Friday Feature, I want to shine a light on the brilliant Silvia Moreno-Garcia—an author who continues to defy expectations and break genre boundaries with each new book. From gothic horror in Mexican Gothic to the noir vibe of Velvet Was the Night and the speculative fiction in Gods of Jade and Shadow, Silvia’s work refuses to be put into a box. And for me, she’s been nothing short of an inspiration.
The Fear-Based Narrative in Publishing
Since I started my writing journey, I’ve heard time and time again from ‘experts’ in the industry: stick to one genre, focus on one kind of book, and make it easier for readers to find you. I get it—there’s this fear-based narrative out there that if you branch out too much, readers will get confused, and success will be harder to reach. But the more I immerse myself in this world, the more I’ve realized that this mindset can limit creative freedom. Why not embrace versatility? Why not push for writers to explore the stories that pull them in all directions?
Silvia Moreno-Garcia: A Multi-Genre Inspiration
Silvia Moreno-Garcia is the perfect example of an author who challenges this norm. She doesn’t just stick to one genre or type of story, yet she has achieved remarkable success. Whether she’s giving us gothic chills in Mexican Gothic, taking us on a magical journey through Mayan mythology in Gods of Jade and Shadow, or diving into the gritty world of noir in Velvet Was the Night, she shows us that readers can and will follow an author across different genres when the storytelling is rich, immersive, and authentic.
For me, Silvia has been a guiding light, reminding me that as writers, we don’t have to conform to one genre or one formula to succeed. Her success proves that exploring different genres doesn’t dilute your voice—it expands it. She inspires me to write outside the norm, to follow the stories that call to me, and to trust that the right readers will follow along.
Writing Outside the Norm
So why isn’t this preached more? Instead of pushing the fear-based narrative of staying within one lane, why not celebrate the authors who break through barriers and bring fresh perspectives across genres? Why not encourage writers to embrace their multi-faceted creative selves and trust that they can still find their audience?
As I continue on my writing path, I’m proud to look to Silvia Moreno-Garcia as proof that multi-genre success is possible. I’m writing stories that pull me in different directions—just like Silvia does—and I know I’m better for it.
Here’s to celebrating the boundary-breaking, genre-defying stories that bring diversity, depth, and excitement to the literary world!
