The Ordinary Bruja

For fans of Mexican Gothic and The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina, The Ordinary Bruja is a psychological horror and magical realism novel about grief, ancestral secrets, Dominican brujería, and one woman’s fight to reclaim the magic her family tried to bury.

When strange messages appear in mirrors, and the scent of cigar smoke follows her through her small Ohio hometown, Marisol Espinal must confront the ghosts of her past, the truth about her mother’s death, and the family curse waiting for her on Hallowthorn Hill.

Her family buried the magic. Now it wants out.

I recently read a dark romance book, “Her Soul To Take,” by Harley Laroux, for the first time in a long time. This book has given me all sorts of reactions, and I just had to share them with you. Here’s my #booklog as I navigate this intense and thought-provoking story.

Reaction 1:
I had to reread the first chapter. Leon is a demon held hostage by this family of occultists, passed down from generation to generation. That’s really messed up!

Reaction 2:
Now, Rae. I love that she’s a goth nerd 🤓 AND has a ghost vlog. She’s been seeing ghosts since she was little, which may have ostracized her a bit, but she has a great support system with her bestie, who owns a bookstore. How cool is that?! I can’t wait to own a bookstore too.

Reaction 3:
Rae is going to let Victoria fool her. Like, can’t she see those rich kids are weird? I don’t like how easily she gets tricked.

Reaction 4:
Evidence #1: Rae arrives at the party, and not only are Victoria and her twin watching her (cringe), but also their dad (super cringe). Yeah, I would have taken my behind back home. That’s too weird for me.

Reaction 5:
I hate to say it, but a warning without a why often goes unheard. I’m pretty sure Rae will go out walking at night again…

Reaction 6:
Rae gave in to make “good content” for her vlog. But what she means by good is overly dramatic and not at all real, like ‘reality’ fiction shows.

Reaction 7:
OMGEEE Rae is going to do a ‘mock’ summoning with a real grimoire to get likes on her YouTube channel. 🤦‍♀️ I think she’s going to summon a real demon—Leon.

Reaction 8:
And boom 💥 there it is⬇️

This book is a rollercoaster, and I’m enjoying every twist and turn. I can’t wait to see what happens next! Stay tuned for more updates on my #booklog journey with “Her Soul To Take.”
