As the air turns crisp and the leaves begin to change, fall presents itself as a season of reflection and renewal. It’s a time when nature undergoes transformation, making it the perfect moment for us to look inward and set new intentions. Fall, to me, feels like harvest season—this is when we scoop our cosecha (harvest). It’s a time to assess what we’ve grown throughout the year, to look at the fruits of our labor, and to decide what we want to carry forward and what we need to change for the future.
Reflecting on Your Harvest
If we truly reap what we sow, then fall is the ideal season to evaluate our cosecha and see if it’s aligned with our desires and goals. What have you planted this year, and what are you now reaping? Are there areas in your life that feel abundant and fulfilling? Are there aspects that feel lacking or need nurturing? This introspection isn’t just about what we have, but also about what we need to sow differently to achieve a more fulfilling harvest next time.
Journaling is a powerful tool during this season. Write down your observations, reflect on your feelings, and record what you’ve learned from your experiences. This process not only helps in acknowledging your achievements but also in recognizing the areas that require change. By documenting these thoughts, you create a roadmap for personal growth and set clear intentions for the coming months.
My Personal Harvest: Facing Procrastination and Comfort Zones
For me, this fall is about recognizing the cosecha of my actions and inactions. One significant aspect I’m facing is the change in the publication date for my book, Under The Flamboyant Tree. This shift isn’t just due to external circumstances—it’s a direct result of my procrastination. Writing and editing this book is a deep and emotional journey, as it’s tethered to scars I acquired during my childhood. While I’ve spoken about these experiences, I recognize that I haven’t fully done the work to heal them.
The reality is, I’ve procrastinated because I’ve sought comfort. There’s a part of me that wants to stay safe, to avoid the discomfort that comes with facing these deep wounds. Yet, this comfort comes at a cost—it prevents me from achieving what I truly want, which is to share this story with the world. As I harvest this realization, I know I must give myself grace, acknowledging that facing one’s demons, much like my character Bianca does in the book, is a difficult and ongoing process.
Balancing Grace and Growth
While I give myself grace, I’m also committed to pushing myself—kindly but firmly. I take inspiration from the characters Yolanda and Clara in my novel, who gently encourage Bianca to face her truths and grow. Just as they support her, I must support myself. It’s about finding that balance between self-compassion and the drive to move forward.
So, I dig deep in my assessment of this year’s cosecha because I want next year’s harvest to be better. I look at my procrastination not as a failure, but as a lesson. What is it trying to teach me? How can I use this knowledge to set intentions that align with my goals and desires? This reflection is crucial because it allows me to consciously plant the seeds of growth, healing, and achievement.
Setting Achievable Goals and Creating Routines
Setting intentions for the fall isn’t just about recognizing what needs to change; it’s also about creating a plan to make those changes happen. Start by setting achievable goals—small steps that lead to big transformations. Whether it’s dedicating a few minutes each day to writing, committing to a regular self-care routine, or making time for activities that nourish your soul, these intentions will guide you through the season.
Establishing routines can be incredibly grounding. They provide structure and consistency, helping you stay focused on your goals. Maybe it’s starting your morning with a gratitude practice, taking a walk in the crisp autumn air to clear your mind, or setting aside a specific time each week for personal reflection. These routines will not only help you stay on track but will also offer a sense of peace and accomplishment.
Embrace the Season of Reflection
Fall is a season of change, and with it comes the opportunity for personal growth. As you set your intentions for the coming months, remember that it’s okay to look back at your cosecha with a critical eye, as long as you also look forward with hope and determination. Whether you’re tackling procrastination, seeking comfort, or striving for greater self-awareness, know that every step you take is a step towards a richer, more meaningful harvest.
So, grab your journal, reflect on your year, and set those intentions. This is your time to plant the seeds for a better future, to nurture the growth you want to see, and to embrace the beautiful evolution that comes with each passing season.
