The Ordinary Bruja

For fans of Mexican Gothic and The Inheritance of Orquídea Divina, The Ordinary Bruja is a psychological horror and magical realism novel about grief, ancestral secrets, Dominican brujería, and one woman’s fight to reclaim the magic her family tried to bury.

When strange messages appear in mirrors, and the scent of cigar smoke follows her through her small Ohio hometown, Marisol Espinal must confront the ghosts of her past, the truth about her mother’s death, and the family curse waiting for her on Hallowthorn Hill.

Her family buried the magic. Now it wants out.

Welcome back to Throwback Thursday, where we dive into the archives to revisit some gems from the past. Today, we’re reflecting on a story that defies the conventional narrative of self-discovery before love. It’s a personal tale where the heroine—yours truly—doesn’t embark on a journey to find herself because she’s always known who she is.

From the early days in my new homeland, navigating the complexities of a school cafeteria as a skinny Latina with a lazy eye and curly-rebel hair with a mind of its own, to the grown woman who confidently walks through life with her head held high. I’ve never been about the transformation but about steadfast self-awareness and acceptance.

My path to finding love was less about discovering myself and more about breaking old habits. For years, I consistently chose the same type of man—charming, funny, and invariably unavailable. This repetitive cycle led to inevitable heartbreak, mimicking the horror movie trope where the protagonist never sees the disaster coming until it’s too late.

Everything shifted after my 30th birthday. Fed up and eager for a change, I delved into a stack of self-help and dating books, each promising enlightenment and strategies for better relationships. Names like Mandy Hale’s The Single Woman: Life, Love, and a Dash of Sass and Steve Harvey’s Act Like a Lady Think Like a Man filled my nights with ideas and introspection.

Armed with newfound knowledge and a resolve to break my old habits, I ventured into the world of online dating—a frontier fraught with skepticism and cautionary tales. Yet, it was there, in the calculated risk of lunch dates at a local coffee shop, that I began to shift my approach to relationships.

The turning point wasn’t a dramatic event but a gradual realization during my interactions on dating sites. I became adept at recognizing what I didn’t want, which empowered me to end things without heartbreak. It was a game of numbers, yes, but also a deeper understanding of myself and my needs.

And then, amidst my quest to eliminate all traces of unavailable men from my life, I nearly missed the right one. He wasn’t part of the new, varied portfolio I was testing; he was a persistent presence I had initially brushed aside. Thankfully, he didn’t give up easily, and a missed opportunity to attend a ball together turned into a last-minute date that changed everything.

That evening, as I finally allowed myself to be swept off my feet, literally and metaphorically, I found not just a partner but a realization that sometimes, the best things happen when you’re busy making other plans. We’ve been together ever since, and as I share this story, I’m reminded of the lessons learned about love, habits, and self-worth.

This story isn’t your typical fairy tale because I was never lost. I didn’t need to find myself or undergo a transformation. I needed to change my perspective, challenge my habits, and open myself to the possibilities of a different kind of love—one that was waiting for me as soon as I was ready to see it.

Reflecting on this, I see not just a personal victory but a broader message about knowing oneself and the power of change. Let’s cherish our histories, learn from them, and keep moving forward, always ready to write the next chapter. And sometimes, let’s be grateful for the Throwback Thursdays that remind us of just how far we’ve come.

Celebrating our journeys, no matter how unorthodox they may seem, is what Throwback Thursday is all about. Do you have a similar tale of love found not in self-discovery but in self-affirmation? Share your stories in the comments below!
