Celebrating Small Wins: The Key to Sustained Motivation in Writing

Writing is often a solitary and long process, filled with moments of self-doubt and the constant challenge of staying motivated. One of the strategies I use to maintain momentum and enthusiasm in my writing projects is celebrating small wins. These small victories, when acknowledged and celebrated, can snowball into larger successes, providing the motivation needed to see a project through to completion.

The Power of Small Wins

Small wins are the little achievements that, although they may seem minor in the grand scheme of things, represent progress and forward movement. These can include finishing a chapter, receiving positive feedback, meeting a daily word count goal, or even overcoming writer’s block for the day. By recognizing and celebrating these moments, we can boost our motivation and keep the momentum going.

How to Celebrate Small Wins

  1. Set Achievable Goals: Break down your writing project into smaller, manageable tasks. Setting and achieving these smaller goals provides frequent opportunities to celebrate progress. I set my word count to 500 words, which is small yet challenging. I set it this way so it doesn’t frustrate me and it also doesn’t bore me.
  2. Acknowledge Your Achievements: Take a moment to acknowledge and appreciate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem. This can be as simple as a mental pat on the back or as elaborate as sharing your progress with friends or fellow writers.
  3. Reward Yourself: Treat yourself for meeting your goals. This could be a small treat, a break to do something you enjoy or a special activity that you reserve for these moments of achievement. I often do a little dance and while this may sound as super frivolous, it perks me up.
  4. Reflect on Your Progress: Regularly reflect on your progress. Keeping a journal or a log of your achievements can help you see how far you’ve come and reinforce your motivation. I have a list of kudos, which I read whenever I am feeling down. In this list, I have achievements (of all sizes) and positive feedback others have given me.
  5. Share Your Success: Don’t be afraid to share your small wins with others. Posting updates on social media or discussing your progress with a writing group can provide additional encouragement and support. This year I have shifted and turned to my blog to post my wins. Sometimes I put it on social media or, more often than not, my broadcast channel on Instagram. I have found that when that small audience that I know it’s there for me, cheers me on, it makes me feel that much happier than a whole bunch of mutuals I rarely engage with.

Snowballing Small Wins into Bigger Ones

The cumulative effect of celebrating small wins can lead to significant achievements. Here’s how to leverage these small victories to snowball into bigger successes:

  1. Build Confidence: Each small win boosts your confidence, making you more resilient and prepared to tackle larger challenges.
  2. Maintain Momentum: Regularly celebrating progress helps maintain a steady momentum, reducing the likelihood of burnout and keeping you engaged with your project.
  3. Stay Motivated: Knowing that you’re making continuous progress, no matter how small, keeps your motivation high and helps you stay committed to your goals.
  4. Foster a Positive Mindset: Celebrating small wins cultivates a positive mindset, making the writing process more enjoyable and less daunting.

My Journey with Celebrating Small Wins

In my own writing journey, celebrating small wins has been instrumental in maintaining motivation and achieving my goals. Whether it’s completing a particularly challenging scene, receiving positive feedback on a draft, or simply meeting my daily word count, these moments of recognition keep me moving forward.

For instance, while writing Mrs. Franchy’s Evil Ring and the Six Months that Changed Everything, I celebrated each completed chapter with a small dance and sometimes a pat on the back or a sweet treat (I have a sweet tooth). These celebrations not only kept me motivated but also made the writing process more enjoyable. The cumulative effect of these small wins eventually led to the completion of the book and the positive reception it received, including a glowing Kirkus review.

Conclusion

Celebrating small wins is a powerful strategy for maintaining motivation and achieving long-term writing goals. By setting achievable tasks, acknowledging progress, and leveraging these small victories, we can build the momentum needed to complete even the most daunting writing projects. Remember, every big success is made up of countless small wins. Celebrate each step of the journey and watch your achievements grow.
