I’m currently deep into Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer, and let me just say, this book is giving me all the cozy, romantic fantasy vibes I didn’t know I needed. I mean, who doesn’t love a good “romantasy”? Plus, the fact that this book was gifted to me just makes it even sweeter—there’s something about a free book that adds to the enjoyment, right?
But let’s talk about the story itself. I have this habit of getting so attached to characters that they start to feel like real people. It’s like I wake up in the morning and think, “I wonder how Evie’s doing?”—as if I could actually check in on her! And honestly, Evie is the kind of character who makes you want to do just that. She’s caught in such a tough spot—no job prospects, a sick parent to care for, and a younger sibling who depends on her. Yet, even when things are rough, she’s the kind of person who gives up a job to someone who seems to need it more. That little scene early in the book really set the tone for who Evie is at her core—a genuinely good person, despite her current gig working for, well, a villain.
Speaking of the villain, can we talk about the romantic tension between Evie and her boss? It’s one of those slow burns that just keeps you hooked. What’s so funny is that for the longest time, Evie just calls him “the villain” or “his evilness,” completely oblivious to the fact that his real name is literally right there on his desk nameplate. But that’s what makes their dynamic so entertaining—Evie is so captivated by him that she doesn’t even notice the obvious. And when he finally says his name out loud, it’s such a great moment. You can’t help but laugh at how she’s been totally wrapped up in the mystery and allure of this so-called villain.
I’m not done with the book yet, but I’m loving the direction it’s going. The interactions between Evie and the villain are filled with this delicious tension that keeps me turning the pages. And let’s not forget the underlying plot of figuring out who tried to kill the villain. It’s adding a nice layer of intrigue to the story, keeping me guessing and totally invested in what happens next.
So, if you’re looking for a cute, cozy, romantic fantasy with a fun twist, Assistant to the Villain is definitely worth checking out. Evie’s journey is one that feels relatable, even in a world full of magic and villains, and the romantic tension? Perfection. I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds!
And while we’re on the topic of romantic tension and captivating characters, I have to mention my upcoming series, The Devil That Haunts Them. If you’re a fan of gothic vibes mixed with family drama and a touch of magical realism, you’re in for a treat. The series includes Under The Flamboyant Tree, The Devil That Haunts Me, and a yet untitled third book from La Doña’s perspective. Like in Assistant to the Villain, you’ll find complex characters navigating intense emotions and challenging circumstances, with a good dose of the supernatural thrown in. Stay tuned—there’s so much more to come!
