The Art of a Perfect Breakup: A Tale of Gratitude

Celebrating a Breakup Done Right

In the ever-tumultuous world of dating, I’ve played both the breaker and the brokenhearted. So, imagine my surprise when Mr. JC delivered what I can only describe as the ‘Michelangelo’ of breakups. It was so flawlessly executed that I briefly considered asking him out again, just for the thrill of another spectacular ending!

Our brief two-month stint was filled with enjoyable outings and conversations, peppered with those delightful free dinners and coffee dates. Sure, the romantic chemistry was as absent as my enthusiasm for gym workouts, but I’m an optimist at heart. I thought, why not let things flow naturally? After all, there wasn’t exactly a line of suitors at my door.

This relationship felt akin to a loveless marriage, the kind that drags on because no one wants to rock the boat. But, of course, we weren’t married, and there were no kids or shared mortgages to consider. It was just a casual fling that lacked the spark.

I suspect Mr. JC had his moment of clarity, realizing what I, too, had noticed but was too reluctant to voice — our paths were meant to diverge.

Then came the text, the ‘Dear Jane’ message that would change my perspective on breakups forever. “I don’t think we are compatible. If you wish, we can meet again to discuss this in person. I wish you the best in your search for your guy.” Reading this, I couldn’t help but flash a grin as wide as the Grinch’s on Christmas. I felt like kissing my iPhone screen in gratitude!

Mr. JC’s text was a double gift. He gave me a clean, dignified exit and spared me the task of initiating the breakup. I’ve had my share of awkward, messy, and downright uncivil splits. But here was Mr. JC, a gentleman offering a mature and considerate farewell. No drama, no bitterness, just two adults acknowledging the end of a chapter.

I replied promptly, echoing his sentiments. “This is perfect! No discussion needed. Wish you the best as well, XOXO.” And just like that, we parted ways — with respect and a surprising dose of affection for the closure he provided.

In a world where ghosting and bitter partings are all too common, Mr. JC’s approach was a breath of fresh air. It reminded me that endings, even in romance, can be handled with grace and maturity. So here’s to Mr. JC, the maestro of a perfect breakup and the unexpected lessons in parting ways!

-XOXO, Johanny
