Mutual Aid Request: Help My Sister Rebuild Her Life

My sister Laura is navigating a difficult divorce while managing chronic illnesses and medical bills. Your support can help her move into a safe home and continue her treatment.

An Unexpected Opportunity – How I Became a ‘Hack’ on Uptime

A graphic featuring the quote "Why can't I?"—Johanny's challenge to herself as she forges new paths in storytelling. Below the quote, there's an Uptime logo and text that says, "Brewing Diversity through Stories by Johanny." The background is a muted purple with abstract shapes, and the title "An Unexpected Opportunity – How I Became a 'Hack' on Uptime" is displayed on the right.

This week’s writing update is a bit different—it’s not about a new chapter or a podcast episode, but an exciting development for Have a Cup of Johanny. It all started with a cold email from an app called Uptime. For those unfamiliar, Uptime is similar to Blinkist, offering bite-sized insights into books, courses, and topics. However, what sets them apart is their use of creators—like me!—as subject matter experts. They call these short episodes “Hacks.”

Check out Uptime

Now, I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first. Spams are everywhere, right? Even during the video conference with the Uptime team, I was side-eyeing the poor guy on the other end. (Bless him, because it must have been awkward!) But hey, give me some grace. I was guarding myself against disappointment. When he asked for a couple of profile pictures, I sent them off without expecting much. I reviewed the drafted “Hack” and even found myself thinking, “Is that all?”

But let me tell you, folks, when I opened my email and saw that my “Hack” had gone live, I was both shocked and delighted. It’s a narrated and writer-focused piece that captures what Have a Cup of Johanny is all about—sharing culturally rich stories, advocating for marginalized voices, and providing lessons learned through my podcast.

Hearing someone else narrate my journey was a surreal experience. I hadn’t realized how much I’d put into my website until I heard it back. This feature on Uptime feels like a stamp of credibility, a validation of my work as I continue climbing the publishing ranks.

I’m glad I took a chance on that email. Yet, my skepticism remains a shield—because, let’s face it, I hate being taken advantage of. But this time, it led to a delightful surprise, and I’m excited to share this milestone with all of you.

Thank you for sticking around, supporting my journey, and growing with me. Here’s to more stories, lessons, and advocacy for inclusive reads!

Stay curious Vacitos,
Joa
