Let’s go back to a Car-Talk I had back on August 27, 2024. As always, my mind was turning and churning with thoughts, and the one that prevailed was the similarities between Mrs. Franchy’s Evil Ring, my childhood, and my adulthood as a stepparent and for whatever reason I was also thinking about turning Mrs. Franchy’s Evil Ring into a series. This is the second part to this Car-Talk where I chat with myself about turning Mrs. Franchy’s Evil Ring into a series. Here’s the revised transcript:

At a recent book fair in Louisville, a couple of parents mentioned that Mrs. Franchy’s Evil Ring might be a bit long for the younger audience it’s intended for. This got me thinking about possibly breaking up the book to make it more accessible for middle-grade readers. I’ve done my research, and while Mrs. Franchy’s Evil Ring is on the higher end of the middle-grade word count, it’s still within publishing standards. I’m still debating whether a shorter version might better serve the young readers I want to reach. Regardless, my desire to expand this story into a series remains strong. There’s so much more to say about the complexities of stepfamily life, and I believe these stories need to be told.
As I contemplate this feedback, I’m vacillating with the idea of splitting Mrs. Franchy’s Evil Ring into two books. On one hand, breaking the story into two shorter books could make it more digestible for younger readers who might find a lengthy novel daunting. A shorter read could also help keep the pacing tight and maintain the reader’s engagement throughout. It would allow me to focus on certain themes or events more deeply in each part, giving the story room to breathe and unfold in a way that feels organic and compelling.

On the other hand, the original version of the book has a unique charm that resonates with readers who enjoy a more substantial read, even among the middle-grade audience. I know there are young-at-heart adults who still love diving into middle-grade books that tackle deeper themes, and for them, a longer narrative offers a richer experience. These readers find comfort in a thicker book, something they can hold onto and lose themselves in for hours. So, I also think of them.
Finding the balance between making Mrs. Franchy’s Evil Ring accessible to its intended younger audience while preserving the depth and complexity that the original length allows is a challenge I’m willing to take on. Perhaps offering both options could be a solution: releasing a two-part series for those who prefer shorter reads while also keeping the original, full-length version for readers who relish a more extensive exploration of the story.
What excites me most about expanding Mrs. Franchy’s Evil Ring into a series is the potential to delve deeper into the evolving relationship between Isla and Mrs. Franchy. There’s so much to unpack in their dynamic, and the journey they go through together is filled with moments of growth, understanding, and the breaking down of misconceptions. By exploring this relationship over multiple books, readers can witness the beautiful evolution of Isla and Mrs. Franchy’s bond—from one of mistrust and fear to one of love and acceptance. This slow unfolding of trust is something I believe many readers, young and old, can relate to, especially those navigating blended families themselves.
Moreover, expanding the series allows for further exploration of other characters and subplots that might not have had enough space in the original book. There are other voices and perspectives within Isla’s world that deserve to be heard, characters whose own stories contribute to the richness of the narrative and the understanding of stepfamily dynamics. Each character adds a layer to the conversation about what it means to be family, how love is expressed, and the ways in which we cope with our past traumas to build a better future.
In the end, my goal is to tell stories that resonate, that reflect the realities of blended families, and that provide both comfort and insight to those who might be going through similar experiences. Whether Mrs. Franchy’s Evil Ring becomes two shorter books or remains a singular, longer novel, the heart of the story will always be the same: a tale of love, resilience, and the power of understanding.
As I continue to write and explore these possibilities, I’m eager to hear from readers, parents, and educators about what resonates most with them. Your feedback is invaluable in shaping these stories, ensuring they touch hearts and provide a sense of belonging, no matter the format they take.
Stay tuned for more updates on this journey! Your support and insights mean the world to me, and I can’t wait to share more of Isla and Mrs. Franchy’s story with you.
