The Marginalized Mindset

When everyone around you is telling you who you should be is hard to prove them wrong. Because at one point, you start believing the lies they whispered to you that got inside your head. You know they are lies because when you look in the mirror, you don’t see what they see. You don’t see someone that is held back because of color, race, or religion. Not even for gender, sexual orientation, or whatever other classification others created to make you feel like an ill-fitting puzzle that you were never meant to be.

You are not a puzzle piece because there’s nothing about you that needs to fit anywhere. You are who you are, and you exist just as you are. When you look in the mirror, you realize you are not just a race, color, gender, or man-made classification on a long list of classifications. You are unique, and may I say divine?

But it’s hard to believe that you are unique and divine at least for very long when everyone around you is trying to squeeze you into a spot you will never be able to fit.

It’s so frustrating

At one point, you may start to believe their lies, and when you do, the world becomes a black and white place because you chose to turn off all the colors your soul brings. Because you squeezed yourself into this tiny space that you could never fit in and dim your light in the process.

But when you think, you genuinely think of who you are and what you are capable of, the black and white mentality will seize to exist. This may take longer, for the world is sometimes a cruel place. When you come out of your hiding hole, your colors will shine so brightly, and a vibrant hue will follow you everywhere and lead others out of their shadow.

It’s hard to shut down others’ opinions of our lives, but it can be done.
I’m supposed to be a single parent, addicted to drugs on my way to jail with my children following close behind. This is the path of black and white, the more natural path paved in front of me, for me to follow. The road was smooth, and everything was there, touching my fingertips at arms reach all I had to do was close my fist and accept their vision of me. But I knew there was color hidden in me, and when I stepped into the sun away from the place that only had clouds, I saw it.

When I surrounded myself with people of vibrant colors, I saw it even more. Till one day, the black and white mind was merely a nightmare, and the colors my reality.

I don’t believe that black and white lie; that some are better than others. Or some are more worthy than others. It is a bald-faced lie, created by those afraid to lose power from those who, when they start seeing in color, would get so high they may even dethrone them.

I tell you, don’t be scared when you see a flash of light, embrace it. It’s okay if the road is not paved, sometimes you may be the first on that road. Don’t believe you are this or that, for only you know who you are and what you are capable of. The mind works in mysterious ways, now are you going to see in colors or grays?
