How It Started
Serial storytelling has always intrigued me. There’s something truly captivating about unraveling a story bit by bit, allowing readers to savor each part and build anticipation for the next. For the longest time, I wanted to dive into serials. I started writing on Wattpad, which was an amazing experience that taught me a lot about reader expectation and marketing. And while my writing has evolved and matured, my curiosity for serial storytelling has only intensified. But here’s the twist: I want to do serials on my own terms.

The Evolution of the Have a Cup of Johanny Serials
I realized that to keep readers engaged, I needed more control over the platform where I publish. I didn’t want to push readers to a platform they might not already use. So, I examined my existing social media presence, thinking about which one would be best suited for a serialized story. I had tried Instagram before, but with limited reaction. Instagram is a visual-first platform, so it made sense that it might not be the best fit for serial storytelling.
That’s when I turned to TikTok. With its high engagement and nearly 2K followers on my page, it felt like the ideal place to bring #TheOrdinaryBruja to life. TikTok’s readers are enthusiastic, and if just 10% of my followers engage with this serial, I’ll feel accomplished and connected to my audience in a fresh, exciting way.
So, with all those thoughts combined, I decided TikTok would be the perfect platform to publish my revised micro-fiction, now titled #TheOrdinaryBruja: A Teensy Tiny Story—and I couldn’t be more excited!

The story of #TheOrdinaryBruja follows Marisol, a seemingly ordinary woman who leads a quiet life in a small town. But Marisol isn’t quite as “ordinary” as she seems. She’s a bruja, a witch, though her powers are subtle and deeply tied to everyday moments. Her magic isn’t flashy or grand; it’s woven into the mundane—like her ability to make plants thrive, her uncanny intuition, and her connection with nature. As Marisol navigates life’s daily challenges, she begins to uncover the hidden, extraordinary side of herself. Through unexpected twists, Marisol’s powers reveal that sometimes, the most powerful magic lies in the simplest of things.
Reader’s Reaction
The response to the first part of #TheOrdinaryBruja has been incredibly rewarding. It received 177 views, which felt like a great start. For the second part, I took advantage of a free promotion TikTok offered, boosting its exposure. And wow—the second part has now reached 3K views!
However, there was a minor hiccup. TikTok swapped out the original music, which included my narration, with a Christmas song. Not going to lie, I was a bit peeved because it impacted the accessibility of the post. But on the bright side, the free exposure (thanks, TikTok, for the coupon!) has helped more people discover the story.r the coupon).
What’s Next
I’ll keep publishing new parts of the serial on TikTok until it’s complete. It’s a teensy tiny novel, so we’re not talking a long commitment—but revamping it, adding layers to the character, and reimagining scenes is bringing me so much joy.
